i have looked into the question of whether bread kills birds as i occasionally put out old, dried bread. mold is bad for birds, i,m concerned the damp bread will encourage mold to grow, also what about if it rains or has heavy humidity?

if bread ends up in water, it can harbor botulism bacteria--this is the killer in canning and is killing waterfowl. it,s a neurotoxin and water fowl poisoned cannot hold up their heads and drown.

as far as a bird bloating up, i have not been able to verify this. a bird,s food goes to it,s crop before it is digested, which contains fine grit or stones that grind it. dinasours also had crops, stones are found with dinosaurs.

some people express concern that bread has become the almost exclusive food for some kinds of birds, like us, they need a variety of foods. even hummingbirds go to different flowers, and eat various tiny insects.

could you try dry bread with your porridge? if it,s dry enough it won,t mold, and if the fat then seals this i think you,ll be ok.

Hi, Is there anyway you could make this without the bread? Bread can bloat in the stomach of a bird and it will kill it. If the young birds eat bread and get filled,(it's like candy to a child), they don't eat the protein or nutrients they need to develop strong bones and they won't make it through the winter.
