black head, grey body,

by Garry Taylor
(Portland OR)

Hi I live in Portland or,

in one of my fir trees there is this little bird who sort of chirps and sort of clicks. I am from the UK and this bird reminds me of the red breasted robin in his cheekyness. He will come and chips quite close to me but always just out of reach. I would love to find out what he is,

sorry I dont have a photo. his beak is relatively light.

Sounds like a junco to me.

This sounds like a male redstart, they make clicking sounds and are quite bold, also they bob their whole body up and down. As they fly away, you will notice a rusty red colour on the back, covered by the wings when not flying. The female is paler, more beige-grey, but has the same red lower back.
I apologise if junco is the USA name for redstart.

Cheeky bird

I believe you are describing an Oregon Junco. Nothing is as cheeky as an English Robin. Lol
