Black goose or swan with red neck\black beak OREGON

by Tim Hutchings
(Salem, oregon)

Saw a group of 4 or 5 black geese or swans with two or three with all black body's and beaks. Two with all black bodies and beaks but with bright red band around necks. They were in a grass area about ten feet away from a flock of regular Canadian geese. Looked just like the Canadian geese same size, except slightly longer necks and solid black with the red necks and black beaks.

Spoke to a fish and wildlife worker who had never seen this type before and neither had I.

Anyone seen these beautiful animals before? We saw them just outside of Salem Oregon and just assumed some migratory bird. So sorry that we didn't get a picture.

Black Swans & cygnets
by: Anonymous

The mating pair of black swans were happily cropping grass near the corner of Croisan Creek Rd and River Rd. this afternoon. Two fuzzy little cygnets were with them. There have been black swans at this site for several years now.

I look forward to seeing these black swans return every year to the Croisan Creek property. I don't think they reside there because they roam freely right next to the road. There are at least 6 new cygnets this year and I've seen as many as 5 adults. Such a treat to see them on my way home almost every night.

new group of cygnets (baby swans)
by: Anonymous

These birds inhabit the grounds of a notable Salem family, the Smiths, whom I believe made their success at least in part by owning a large share if the VIP's Enterprises holdings around Oregon. The black swans have been there for many years; there are at least two mature breeding pairs that I have seen, and today, 3/23/15, my wife and I saw a new "batch" of 3 cygnets, as the baby swans are called. The locale around the end of Croisan Creek Rd. where it meets S. River Rd is where they are usually seen.

I saw the black swans with red beaks today. Looked in my willamette valley bird book and couldn't find a bird to match. They were on the corner of crosian creek and river road. Could they belong to the house there with the huge grounds? Maybe who ever lives there has brought them in. I know there are black swans at the city park in Ashland. Perhaps I can find a picture of those and see if its the same bird type.
