Black and white bird

by Douglas Cummins
(Nebraska)

This bird has a black back, with white under it's wings, and some white nears it's head and on it's breast.. It made a nest by pecking a hole in a dead willow tree. It is being harrased by two black birds. I would like to know the name of this bird.

Hi Douglas, We would need more information to positively ID your bird however it would be a woodpecker if it drilled it's own hole for the nest. Many birds will nest in a hollow tree but they don't drill into a dead tree. Did you see or hear it drilling? If you can give us the approx size of the bird, a clearer description of the color markings, and even how high the nest is from the ground would help.
