Birds wrestling

Living in eastern Pennsylvania. Observed two small brown birds wrestling on the ground and flopping around together. I wondered if it was some kind of a mating ritual or actual mating behavior, but it went on for a good five minutes. I walked up to about 6 feet from them and they paid no attention to me. 20 minutes or so later I saw them flying around , one looking like it was chasing the other but in a friendly way. Just wondering what this behavior represented as it was this was something I’ve never seen before
