Your photo shows a male Northern Flicker Woodpecker. The female does not have the red lines under the eye. During mating season the males like to announce their presence by tapping loudly on any hard object in high places. We often have them drumming on our roof. They love to hang on birdfeeders like in your photo and on suet feeders. They also are often seen on the ground looking for insects.
