Possibly a Black-and-White Warbler. They can be found in North Carolina, and lay their nest upon the ground.
There is a black-and-white warbler on the left hand side of the picture. Is that your bird?

Black Banded Bird

Thank you! The birds I saw were white underneath, grayish-brown back/head and and two black bands across upper chest. It is a Killdeer.

Thanks again!

Killdeer

It might be a killdeer. We have these come and lay eggs in our backyard every year. It has a distinct shrill sound, and two black bands around its neck.
