bird id?

i was reading outside, when i looked up and happened to notice a medium sized bird, about that of a small woodpecker, perched on a branch above my willow tree and keenly observing me! it was black, white and grey, with different markings- on its back it was black with white speckles/spots, on its head it had a yellowish streak right above the eye- with a white/grey belly. it behaved sort of like a woodpecker, but not quite-- any idea what this is? i've never seen this kind of bird before- i live in southern ontario, near toronto
