Bird I have never seen before

by Leona Kelly
(Cape Breton Nova Scotia Canada)

Snow Bunting

Snow Bunting

We have a bird in our yard for the past two weeks.....we have never seen anything like it before....It is small like a sparrow....White with black striped wings...Most of the bird is white....It sits on the ground eating the seeds......Stays here all day!

Hi Leona. Looks like a Snow Bunting. He is no doubt enroute north to the Arctic tundra.
Once it reaches his destination, these cheerful little foragers fatten on a seed diet picked up where other birds would starve. Instead of hopping, it walks over the frozen fields and rarely perches higher than a bush or fence rail, for it comes very near being a ground bird. Enjoy, while he takes a rest in your yard!
