Bird House

Ok, does anyone know how to make birds notice a bird house? I think birds are going to nest soon/Go nesting spot hunting, because it is March now, and I want carolina chickadees or tufted titmice to hopefully nest in my bird house.
Any tips?
Also, below my bird house, there are some tiny rocks. I think I should cover them with leaves or something in case any baby birds try to fledge and then they fall. Thanks.
