big bird with orange crest on head

I heard this weird sound, sort of like a woodpecker pecking so I went to look. There was the really strange bird way up in our tall palm tree in the canyon. It looks to be about the size of a chicken. It has gray, kind of striped light and darker feathers. It has a very bright orange crest on it's head. I've heard this noise coming from it for about four days now but this is the first time I've actually observed it.
