Back yard bird

by Steve
(Barrington, IL)

I saw this robin-sized bird in our northern Illinois backyard feeder area on 5/24/15. It was walking on the ground, tried to hide in some low vegetation then flew into a bush. The interesting characteristics are the tan chest with black spots, the long beak and the short tail. I cannot find it in my Birds of Illinois Field Guide.

Can anybody identify it?

Check out pictures of baby robins on line. They look like robins, but with spotted chests and they stay close to the ground until they are able to fly. The mom and dad still feed them - teaching them how to get food.
