Back yard bird?

A few day ago in our back yard, which is 6 miles n.w. of bangor, there were two birds. One was totally black and the other one was all black, except his head was a bright red. I thought they were both crows at first, which we have an abundance of. They didn't fly, just walked across the lawn, into the woods. Again, today we saw the same bird, with the red head walking beside the road just a short distance from here. It was the size of a crow and as black as one, also, except for the red head. Neither time did it attempt to fly. Would appreciate anything information . Thank you very much, Elaine Littlefield
