back garden visitor to Middlesex in England

Single bird about 3-4 inches long (smaller than an english robin), 80% of body is red; remainder is black trim on shoulder, wing edges and tail feathers. Popped onto my garden fence just a foot or so away from my regular robin visitor. Stayed about 10 seconds and flew off very quickly! Never seen it before but reminds me of a miniature cardinal? I live in Stanmore, Harrow. Needless to say, no time for a photo but I would know it fron another's photo or drawing in an instant.

My first thought is a scarlet tanager,but you can go here tgo see if there is a similarity.
