All black but not a grackle

The bird is shaped like a mocking bird. It's not a shiny black, more of a flat black or dark grey. I has a chirp like a finch that's very soft. I have never seen one before and there were a par below my crape myrtles. I couldn't tell if they were after bugs or seed on the ground. I live in nc.
